Doctor Oster is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in private practice. A faculty member of the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, Dr. Oster teaches doctoral students in the areas of psychopathology, professional issues and practice, clinical hypnosis, behavioral medicine, health psychology, psychological testing, forensic psychology, and psychotherapy. Besides his teaching duties he oversees the school’s Certificate in Clinical Hypnosis program. His practice interests include clinical hypnosis, health psychology and behavioral medicine, psychotherapy, consultation, supervision, psychological and diagnostic assessment and forensic evaluation.
Dr. Oster is listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology and is a member of the American Psychological Association.
He is a Board- certified Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Examiners and is a Fellow of the American College of Forensic Examiners. He has been a Board member and President of the Chicago Society of Clinical Hypnosis. He is a Board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis (ABPH) and serves as a member of that Board; is a Fellow and President-elect of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH); holds Approved Consultant status in Clinical Hypnosis by ASCH and serves on their Regional and Annual Workshop Faculty. Active in the field of clinical hypnosis for over 22 years, Dr. Oster served on or chaired several ASCH committees, including the Executive Committee, Standards of Training, and Certification committees and is co-author of the revision of the ASCH Code of Ethics. He is the Secretary and a Trustee of he ASCH Education and Research Foundation.
Dr. Oster is the recipient Milton H. Erickson Award for Scientific Excellence in Writing on Clinical Hypnosis, American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis (2000), the Presidential Award (1997 & 2001) and the Irving I. Secter Award (1995 & 2000) from the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis for his contributions to that Society and to clinical hypnosis.
Dr. Oster has given numerous presentations at scientific meetings, workshops, on radio, television, in the newspapers, and at conventions on topics relating to clinical hypnosis, behavioral medicine, professional practice issues, psychology and law related matters, psychotherapy, clinical psychology. In the past 15 years, Dr. Oster has accumulated over 35 publications, scientific presentations and other public presentations. He’s appeared in or presented on: WBEZ – National Public Radio; Chicago Tribune Tempo Health & Science; CLTV News; Zimbardo & Weber’s (1994) book, Psychology; CNBC’s American Medical Television JAMA Medical Rounds; Chicago Tribune (Northwest); Pioneer Press Arlington Heights News; WCBR Radio; CBS Television’s “Different Drummers”; Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, and recently consulted with NBC News DATELINE and the U.S. Navy Medical Corps concerning topics relating to the use of hypnosis.
Dr. Oster received his Bachelor’s and his Master’s degrees from Western Michigan University and his Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree in Clinical Psychology from Forest Institute of Professional Psychology.
