TMJ, Neuromuscular Dentistry, A/O Chiro, NUCCA, SOT, Cranio, Chirodontics and Craniosacral Therapy

Patients suffering from chronic musculoskeletal disorders often require an integrative health team. In addition to the practioners mentioned in the articles there is also a need for sleep doctors, psychologists, massage therapists and more. This is not meant to be all inclusive but rather to tie the structural aspects of these disorders together in an short understandable form. Unfortunately, many doctors do not work with a variety of other professionals to provide full body holistic care. The treatment is often only as good as the weakest link. Spheopalatine Ganglion Blocks are an example of sometimes essential treatment that is not postural in nature.

Treatment of TMJ disorders and MPD with Neuromuscular Dentistry, Trigger Point Injections, SPG Blocks and Prolotherapy give amazing life changing results to many patients. So where do all of these other therapies fit into the treatment plan.

TMJ disorders can be divided into three components The Joints, he muscles and neuromuscular systems and Posture.

Posture is a full body expression of what is right and what is not throughout the body.

NUCCA and Atlas Orthoganol Chiropractic concentrate on the effect of the head/ (first to vertebrae) atlas and axis to the entire posture of the head and neck as well as the rest of the body.

Dentists like to refer to the mandible as a counterbalance to the head relative to the spine but when the occiput/Atlas/ Axis apparatus is out of alignment there is a disconnect for jaw position and body posture.

Ideally, patients will be seen by A/O chiropractors or NUCCA Chiropractors simultaneously.

My colleague Dr Mark Freund utilizes both SOT and A/O Chiropractic when working with my patients.
The SOT technique of chiropractic is unique as well. According to their website:
“The Sacro Occipital Technic is a system of chiropractic and chiropractic Craniopathy that integrates art, science and philosophy of optimizing the human innate healing systems. SOT® Methods utilizes a systemic and systematic approach to removing neurological/structural/functional interferences thereby returning the innate healing capacity to the system.

Specialized integrated procedures include chiropractic biomechanics, nutrition, functional neurology, soft tissue reflexes and chiropractic Craniopathy addressing the craniosacral respiratory mechanism.

SOT® Methods and SOT® Methods Craniopathy is the philosophy of art and science of restoring the innate healing capacity in humans utilizing a systemic and systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment of the neurological, structural and CSF flow mechanisms from a functional perspective.

Restoration or maintenance of health is accomplished through specialized integrated procedures including functional chiropractic neurology and biomechanics, nutrition, soft tissue techniques and the diagnosis and treatment of the craniosacral respiratory mechanism (CSRM). The techniques utilized in SOT® Methods promote optimal innate healing mechanics for the spine, pelvis, cranium, organs, extremities, nervous system, brain and muscles. These techniques promote balance, neurological integrity and integrated function of the organ structure and neurological mechanism.”

According to the NUCCA.org website Nucca Chiropractic is:
“The NUCCA procedure is unique because it frees the nervous system of interference by using a precise, non-invasive, gentle touch technique.

NUCCA can help you feel better regardless of your circumstances because your central nervous system affects all human function, therefore when it is inhibited, varying conditions or problems may result, but when it’s clear, optimal health and well-being can be realized.
The NUCCA procedure brings several generations of clinical research to correcting the serious problem of the Atlas Subluxation Complex. By using precise and objective x-ray views of the head and neck, mathematical measurement and analysis are made of the misalignment.

Once the misalignment is understood by the doctor, there is no need for further x-rays because correlating the relationship between posture and upper cervical misalignment allows posture to then be used thereafter to judge alignment. There is also often less need for repeated corrections because returning the bones of the neck to a normal position also normalizes function in the body.”

This is very similar to Atlas / Orthoganol Chiropractic which is described by my friend and colleague Mark Freund DC as”

How the Atlas Orthogonal Procedure Treats Pain and Promotes Health

Your spinal cord is an important part of your body’s central nervous system. It carries nerve signals from your brain and sends them throughout your body to control every aspect of your health and functioning. Your spinal vertebrae protect your spinal cord and help ensure its continued function, but a misalignment of any of the vertebrae can impair nervous function and contribute to muscular problems and misalignments of the entire skeletal system. Often, spinal misalignment begins when the atlas vertebra is out of place, and when this first and very important vertebra is misaligned, it can lead to problems with the rest of the spine and the entire body. The atlas orthogonal procedure is a gentle, safe, and pain-free way to treat misalignment of the atlas vertebra.

Did you know that your head weighs between nine and 17 pounds, but your atlas vertebra weighs a mere two ounces? And yet this tiny bone must support the entire weight of your head. In order to do so, it must be in just the right position. The atlas orthogonal procedure can restore the atlas vertebra to this optimal position for supporting the head. By merely adjusting the atlas vertebra, the entire spine and musculoskeletal system gradually returns to proper health and alignment.

When the atlas vertebra is not in its proper position, the head cannot sit properly on the spine and the body struggles to maintain a normal center of gravity. As a result, the body compensates to keep the head level. The result is usually a contraction of the muscles on one side of the body that can cause one leg to appear shorter than the other and cause other parts of the body, such as the shoulders and hips, to come out of alignment. Neck pain, back pain, loss of cervical curve, scoliosis, and other symptoms can result.

The atlas orthogonal procedure gently restores the atlas vertebra to its optimum position, without twisting or cracking. Only a very small amount of pressure needs to be applied to the atlas vertebra to restore normal alignment to the entire body. Dr. Freund is the only chiropractor in Lindenhurst who performs the atlas orthogonal procedure, but he has already used it to bring relief to many of his patients. Try it for yourself today.”

Chirodontics and Cranio or Cranial work describes treatment that combines chiropractic manipulations that include movements of cranial bones and well as spine corrections. CranioSacral work is the combining of cranio work and spinal posture. Cranio Sacral refers o the cranium or head down where Sacral Occipital (SOT) refers to work from the sacrum (tailbone) up.

The spine is essentially like a giant slinky with waves moving up and down constantly changing the balance.

There are three major set points in the Human Body. The teeth and jaws when you bite. This is best addressed with neuromuscular dentistry to create a healthy physiologic bit. The hips either standing or sitting. The legs and feet affect the hips when standing. Third is the Occipital / Atlas/ Axis apparatus.

I work with Dr Mark Freund because he is the only midwest practioner who can address all of these chiropractic areas of concern and he appreciated the central role of neuromuscular dentistry in establishing and adjusting maxillo-mandibular position to an ideal position. This is very important with high end chiropractic techniques.

Dr Mark Freund will be available for appointments in Highland Park starting Around August 1, 2016. The office is 3500 Western Ave and is conveniently located very close to the Fort Sheridan Metra Station.
