A diagnosis of Sleep Apnea will usually result in a CPAP titration and a prescription for a CPAP machine. Finding a comfortable mask can be a daunting task. 60% of all patients prescribed CPAP abandon CPAP therapy entirely and problem related to mask fit is sited as a primary reason.
ResMed Inc. is the world’s second- biggest maker of CPAP machines that help regulate breathing for people with sleeping disorders. They announced a 30% increase in mask sales and an increased net income of 190.1 million up from 146.4 million one year earlier. ResMed also announced a two-for-one split of the company’s outstanding shares of common stock.
I had not read the report "Expert Panel Recommendations Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Safety" and have only read thru it briefly to this point. I do not know whether or not this report has been accepted by the Dept of Transportation and placed into written regulations.
Patients with fluctuating high blood pressure are at greater risk of stroke than patients with consistently high blood pressure. A frequent cause of elevated blood pressure (hypertension) is untreated sleep apnea. Patients with untreated sleep apnea frequently have wide swings in blood pressure at night and will often have high blood pressure in early morning readings.
Sleep apnea is a life threatening condition that can cause hear attacks, strokes, worsen diabetes,adversely affect short term memory loss and cognitive function and increase risks of motor vehicle accidents 600%. CPAP, or continuous positive air pressure is used to treat obstructive sleep apnea and is considered to be the gold standard of treatment.
CPAP is still considered the Gold Standard of treatment for obstructive sleep apnea treatment but the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) now considers Dental Sleep Medicine and Oral Appliances a first line approach for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea.
According to information on the AADSM website "the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine supports new guidelines that identify oral appliance therapy as an effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.
